Les menthes sont utilisées depuis plusieurs millénaires dans la médecine traditionnelle et comme aromatisant mais la menthe poivrée n'a fait l'objet d'une description botanique par LINNE qu'au 18ème siècle. Ce travail s'intéresse spécifiquement à la menthe poivrée, Mentha x piperita, famille des lamiacées. La feuille, inscrite à la Pharmacopéé européenne (4ème é|dition), contient entre autes composés des polyphénols et des terpènes dont le constituant majoritaire est le menthol. La feuille, l'huile essentielle ont des propriétés antispasmodique, eupeptique, cholérétique, antiseptique respiratoire et tonifiante sur le système nerveux. Elles sont utilisées notamment dans les troubles digestifs tels que la dysspepsie et le syndrome du colon irritable. Actuellement, les activités anti-inflammatoires et antalgiques du menthol sont mises en évidence par la recherche dans des expérimentations animales in vitro et in vivo. De plus, les données récentes pharmacologiques précisent le rôle des canaux calciques dans l'activité antispasmodique et celui des canaux sodiques dans l'activité anesthésique du menthol. En outre, des essais cliniques prouvent l'efficacité de l'huile essentielle dans les nausées post-opératoires et les spasmes survenant lors d'examens invasifs ainsi que dans les algies et les migraines. L'officine offre une place conséquente d'une part à la menthe poivrée et à l'HE dans les domaines de la phytothérapie et de l'aromathérapie et d'autre part au menthol dans des spécialités pharmaceutiques. Ces produits font l'objet de certaines contre-indications connues du pharmacien. Ce dernier doit exercer son rôle de conseil en indiquant les précautions d'emploi lors de la délivrance en thérapeutique humaine et en parapharmacie mais également en médecine vétérinaire.

L'aromathérapie fait partie intégrante de la phytothérapie. Elle correspond à l'utilisation des huiles essentielles extraites de plantes aromatiques à des fins thérapeutiques. Dans cette thèse, il est tout d'abord détaillé l'origine de l'aromathérapie, le mode d'extraction ainsi que les critères d'identification des huiles essentielles. Nous voyons ensuite comment s'effectue l'assurance-qualité des huiles essentielles et des produits d'aromathérapie. Il est ensuite rappelé les précautions générales d'emploi et les principaux effets indésirables des huiles essentielles. Dans une seconde partie, il est abordé l'usage des huiles essentielles dans certaines pathologies fréquemment rencontrées au comptoir et pour lesquelles le choix parmi les spécialités existantes est restreint. Nous verrons quelles huiles essentielles peuvent être utilisées dans le cadre de l'acné, de la cystite, du furoncle/panaris et de l'herpès labial, études à l'appui. Il est déterminé pour chaque pathologie abordée le cadre adapté au bon usage de ces huiles essentielles, c'est-à-dire les limites entre la possibilité d'un conseil donné par le pharmacien et la nécessité de consulter un médecin. Il est clairement montré dans ces études que les huiles essentielles présentent une action anti-infectieuse contre les germes responsables des pathologies abordées.
